Research into laser technology has been done for many years in New Mexico - at the Federal Laboratories, within the university environment and in the private sector. Part of that effort has been at the basic research level with the primary interest being the use of ultra short pulse lasers to understand ultra-fast physical processes.
Recent important improvements (reductions in size, to name one) in ultra short pulse lasers have made the technology even more commercializable and potentially profitable. Given that recent development, and based upon the State’s existing capabilities and expertise in the technology, it was decided that an investment would be made to support the search for more commercial applications. Some of the applications lie in the areas of medical and surgical treatments, milling technology, remote sensing and more.
It was agreed that four-to-five R&D hubs (bringing together public and private sectors) be established to develop such commercial applications and that a collaboration and friendly competition among them be initiated.
The State of New Mexico believes that much of its future growth will come from supporting leading edge technology that creates whole new industries and thereby new opportunities for its high tech companies and workers.
Recent New Mexico legislation in January 2007 authorized an investment of $1 million for such work.
