National Center for Genome Resources

The National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a non-profit research institution dedicated to improving human health and nutrition through genome sequencing and analysis. Their vision is to pioneer the use of genome sequencing and analysis to improve treatment of diseases and nutrition. NCGR specializes in Biomarker Discovery in order to enable Personalized Medicine and Crop Improvement.

NCGR offers two types of services to universities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies nationwide: Genome Sequencing Services and Genome Sequence Analysis Services. NCGR has active collaborations with many leading universities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

NCGR has nationally recognized genome research programs in Human and Plant Infectious Diseases, Legume and Tree Crop Improvement and Applications of Semantic Web technologies

NCGR studies the influence of genome variability of both host and pathogen on infectious disease progression and its impact on human and plant health.  Major human infectious diseases of interest are Sepsis (bloodstream infection), Pneumonia, Tuberculosis and Influenza.  Major plant pathogens are Phytophthora, particularly Phytophthora capsici (the major pathogen of chili).

Major legume crops of interest are Soybeans, Peanuts and the model organism Medicago truncatula.  The major tree crop of interest is Poplar.  Major plant projects are Soybean Rust resistance, Peanut Allergy and Biodiesel Production.

In collaboration with the New Mexico Tech, the MIND Institute and the University of New Mexico, NCGR is undertaking the Schizophrenia Genome Project.  This pioneering program is using genome sequencing and analysis to discover the inherited factors that cause Schizophrenia.

NCGR was founded in 1994 to share and analyze genome sequence data from the Human Genome Project occurring at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
